All About Me

Why I want to be a teacher?

The decision to become a teacher was sudden, yet drawn out. Please allow me to explain. My mother had always told me that I was meant to be a teacher. After high school graduation, I earned a degree in Criminal Justice. It was after earning this degree, serving on a Spanish speaking mission trip for my church, and returning home, that I began to believe my mother was right. However, I first began looking for a job in Criminal Justice; but there was no job available at this time. With my mother’s encouragement I applied for and was hired as a sixth grade paraprofessional. By the end of the first day, I felt that I was meant to be a teacher. I have never regretted that decision. My conviction to be an educator has only grown stronger.

Several incidents have occurred that have made me feel that my decision was right. The first incident happened during my first year as a paraprofessional. It was the first time I told a child, “I love you.” The words, which I was afraid to say, had barely left my mouth when the child’s face lit up. I knew that those were words not often heard by this child. I knew then that I wanted to let all children I teach know what it’s like to be loved. This is one reason I want to be a teacher, I want to share my heart.

The next reason cannot be broken down into just one incident; it’s something that has occurred often. The first time it happened was during my first year as a paraprofessional. I was listening to a discussion among a group of children. During the conversation one of the children made a statement that was exactly what I had said earlier in the day. After the child made the statement, the other children in the group began to say the same. They had learned to imitate my remarks. That was one of the most profound moments of my life. I learned that children will mimic me. They will acquire small pieces of me. I knew then that I must always say and do things that are worthy of imitation because I serve as a role model.

Probably the greatest influence on me becoming a teacher happened my last year as a paraprofessional. I was able to befriend a child who was having a lot of difficulties in his life. It was through this friendship I was able to help. I was the person the child confided in when he began to contemplate suicide. I was able to take the child to the school counselor and get him the help he needed. If he ever felt discouraged, he would call me. This was a major event in my life.

I know that teachers are not just in a classroom to teach. They are there to inspire, love, and help. Teachers have the opportunity to change lives. In changing a child’s life, the teacher’s life may change as well. I know that I am meant to be a teacher. I look forward to helping students, being a positive role model, and giving loving care to each child. I know that I cannot change the world, but if I can help just one student my life will be rewarding.
