Chapter 1:
Billy takes bet
Alan makes bet (plans to get $ from his savings)
Tom and Joe/the other friends (Tom on Billy’s side/Joe on Alan’s)
Bet: $50 to eat 15 worms in 15 days/one a day (cooked however Billy wants it/with whatever he wants on it/ Alan and Joe
find the worms/someone has to see him eat it)
Chapter 2:
Al and Joe want to dig in the manure pile
Decide on a huge night crawler (bigger)
Chapter 3:
Billy always takes bets
--One time took bet to sleep in igloo all night/ almost gave up/ tricked a pack of dogs into igloo/slept between them all
night to keep warm
Condiments: ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, jars of piccalilli and mustard, crackers, salt and pepper, lemon, cheese, cinnamon
and sugar, Kleenex, cherries, horseradish, and honey
Chapter 4:
Boiled night crawler
Billy argues it’s not a worm/ they look in dictionary/ it is
Wants to buy a mini-bike with the winnings
After eating, he begins to flap around like a bird/ scares Joe and Alan
Chapter 5:
The boys consider spiking the next worm with pepper to make Billy sneeze
Chapter 6:
Eats 2nd worm, but it really starts making him sick
Chapter 7:
Decide to fry the worm in cornmeal and pretend it’s a fish
Dream of driving bike in church and school
Chapter 8:
Eats fired 3rd worm
Chapter 9:
Alan and Joe are planning something
Chapter 10:
They tell Billy that Joe’s dad freaked when he thought Joe was eating a worm./ said mom passed out
Didn’t tell why
It’s their trick
Chapter 11:
Try to get Tom to eat one/ to prove they weren’t harmful
He chickened out and ran away
Chapter 12:
Billy wasn’t going to eat the 5th worm, but he over hears Joe and Alan making fun of him/ ate worm
Chapter 13:
Alan’s worried about losing, knows his dad won’t give him the money
Calls and wakes Joe late at night
Chapter 14:
Billy has a nightmare about eating worms
Wakes up sick
Chapter 15:
Wakes his parents
Mom is worried/ dad is not- said he ate a live crawfish in college and nothing happened
Calls poison control
Chapter 16:
Eats the worm no problem
Chapter 17:
Eats 7th no problem
Still not talking to Tom
Chapter 18:
Ate 8th
Joe didn’t come
Still not talking to Tom
Chapter 19:
Joe and Alan glue two worms together, fried them
Tried to make Bill think it was one worm/ he scrapped off cornmeal and found out
Called Tom in to see/ This makes them start talking again
Chapter 20:
While eating Wheaties, Billy asks mom why we don’t eat hotdogs for breakfast
Joe and Alan try telling Billy’s mom he’s still eating worms
She gets upset/calls Dr./ he says it’s okay/ she asks that this be the last bet
J and A are going out of town/ they ask mom to see that Billy eats his next 2 worms
They argue that he must eat them bite by bite, not chopped up (like in chicken salad)
Chapter 21:
Billy’s parents joke about bet
They look for worm recipes in the cookbook
He likes the worm his mom made/ dad tries to take a bite/ Mom tells him that Billy has to eat every bite
Chapter 22:
Mom makes a “Whizbang Worm Delight” it’s an ice cream sundae with a worm in it
Emily (Billy’s sister) still says she wouldn’t eat one
Chapter 23:
J and A make plans to invite Billy to Shea Stadium
Plan to stuff him with junk food so he’ll fall asleep on the way home and with go to bed without eating a worm/going
to invite both Billy and Tom (but lie and say tom got sick/so he can’t help Billy)
Chapter 24:
Alan tells them he’s giving up and invites them to the Mets game
Tom wants to eat Billy’s mom’s chocolate pudding/ settles for ice cream
Makes joke: “I have a cousin names Columbus. Columbus Ohio. He’s a capital fellow”
Chapter 25:
Trick works, Billy falls asleep
Chapter 26:
Billy’s mom wakes him when she’s washing his face off
He realizes the boys trick
It’s a quarter to 12
Runs and wakes Tom and his brother Pete
Pete finds a worm
Chapter 27:
Turn on siren outside Alan’s house
Wakes everyone/Billy eats worm raw/falls down holding stomach
Chapter 28:
Alan’s dad is mad
Joe hides under the bed
They’re made to go house to house and apologize to everyone in the neighborhood
Dad says that it better not happen anywhere again (meaning the boys better not try to do it to Billy and Tom)
Chapter 29:
Boys fight (Alan and Joe crawl off)
Begin to throw mud
Billy gets hit in the head with a rock
Tom takes him home
Chapter 30:
Get a letter from Dr/ says he found an article saying worms can hurt you
Billy was eating a fried worm and peanut butter sandwich
Chapter 31:
Billy’s dad comes home
Billy shows him the letter
He says “so it fooled you?”
Chapter 32:
Turns out the medical words were actually a type of sea bird
Billy eats the sandwich (14th worm)
Chapter 33:
Eats “15th worm” (southern fried and tastes different)
Sets time to get the money (10 o’clock tomorrow)
Chapter 34:
Billy burps beans
Thinks worm was fake
Decides to eat another just to be safe
Tom isn’t here
Chapter 35:
While eating the second worm/ Alan locks Billy in a closet
Joe warns that his parents will hear him in there
Chapter 36:
They try to put him down the cistern
Billy’s parents find them/ they send the boys home and Billy to his room/ he isn’t allowed to finish the worm
Chapter 37:
He is mad/ kicking the bed
Chapter 38:
Tom shows up/ asks Billy’s mom what happened
Chapter 39:
Tom is distracting mom so Pete can sneak Billy a worm
Alan and Joe yell for Billy’s mom
Billy eats worm and wins bet
Dances of with Tom chanting about winning
Chapter 40
Find out Alan is having to work to pay off bet
Billy bought the mini-bike
He’s still eating worms/says he’s hooked
