I think my favorite service ever was the soup kitchen we use to work at. Once a week we would volunteer to cook
dinner for the homeless. This was a major learning experience. I learned to really appreciate what I have.
I always share this story with my students. One time I met a 13 year old girl. It was her birthday. My friend
and I asked her what she wanted for her birthday. Her answer? A toothbrush. She said her's was old and she
wanted a new one. Really makes you stop and think.
I also enjoyed volunteering at rest homes. We would often go sing to the elderly, or just sit and talk with them.
This was alot of fun also. Once a year we'd volunteer at the Cal. State Fullerton Special Olympics. We were assigned
a "Buddy". We would help this person participate in the games as well as eat. We'd spend the whole day talking
with them. It was awesome.
